| 25-Oct-2003 |
KATHMANDU, Oct 23
Kathmandu and Pokhara should have a direct air-link with north Indian cities such as Deharadun, Lucknow, Allahabad, Agra, Patna and Varanasi to increase the number of Indian tourists significantly, said Shyam Saran, Ambassador of India to Nepal on Wednesday.
Addressing a gathering of half yearly General Body Meeting of Hotel Association Nepal, Envoy Saran said that each of these north Indian cities have a large number of middle class population, with enough income to afford holidays during summer.
“Destinations in Nepal for Indians have a merit of being both economical as well as less crowded,” said Envoy Saran, stating that summer destinations in India like Mussoorie, Shimla and Darjeeling are extremely congested and expensive.
In addition to the air linkages, Envoy Saran also stressed on the extension of land linkage between India and Nepal through railway linkages and national highways. Both the governments are looking for an extension of land transport, he said.
“With a view to promoting cross-border traffic, our two government are also looking at an extension of Indian railway lines into Nepal,” he said, adding that a project has been passed to improve Nepal’s east west highway, linking it with number of hill stations.
Envoy Saran was a keynote speaker at the function that had a theme ‘Infrastructure Development for Regional Tourism’.
Dr Shankar Sharma, Vice Chairman of National Planning Commission (NPC), said that the concentration should be on dealing with policy level issues to increase the number of Indian tourists. “The government is serious in improving the fundamentals,” he said.
